Breadcrumbs

Breadcrumbs display a user’s current location in a hierarchical structure. They augment the Navigation Panel for navigational hierarchies with more than two levels.

Sample

Use breadcrumbs to show a user’s location in a hierarchical structure with more than two levels. Breadcrumbs help users remember their place in the structure and allow them to quickly access a higher level.

Place breadcrumbs above the structure. Place it above the screen title if that screen lies within the structure.

Show at least three levels in the breadcrumbs. Most users will not need help remembering a two-level structure. Breadcrumbs in these scenarios, then, add visual noise and get in the user’s way.

Keep the current location as plain text. Users are already at that location, so there is no need to link to it. If the user needs to refresh the view, provide a refresh button as an obvious and direct method.
